100 GENETIC DISEASES & DISORDERS

This interactive data visualization allows users to learn about 100 genetic diseases and the relationships between them. The data was complied after weeks of researching the National Library of Medicine. My research was sorted through a spreadsheet where I categorized the meta data using the L.A.T.C.H. method (location, alphabet, timeline, category, hierarchy). After several design trial and errors, I came to the final design as shown above. The data can be sorted and filtered using the key at the bottom of the user’s screen. To pan across the data, the user two-finger swipes across the screen. To learn more about a particular disease, the user clicks the respected dot to reveal more information. Each sorted element is opened and closed with a click. The walkthroughs below show only a few examples of each area of filtering providing the understanding that each element holds the shown capabilities.
USERS WILL NOTICE THE DIFFERING MANIFESTATIONS, FREQUENCIES, AND NAMES & CATEGORIES OF EACH DISEASE. USERS HAVE ACCESS TO AN INSTRUCTIONAL MODULE EXPLAINING USING A TWO-FINGER SWIPE TO SCROLL ACROSS ALL THE DATA.
USERS MAY CLICK EACH INHERITANCE BUBBLE TO CATEGORIZE THE DATA BY GENETIC INHERITANCE. THIS WALKTHROUGH SHOWS DISEASES INHERITED THROUGH CHROMOSOMES AND AUTOSOMAL DOMINANCE.
USERS MAY CLICK EACH GENETIC CATEGORY BUBBLE TO CATEGORIZE THE DATA BY GENETIC CATEGORY. THIS WALKTHROUGH SHOWS DISEASES CATEGORIZED AS AFFECTING OR PRESENTING THROUGH CHROMOSOMES AND CANCER PREDISPOSITION.
USERS MAY CLICK EACH AFFECTED BUBBLE TO CATEGORIZE THE DATA BY WHO IS PRIMARILY AFFECTED BY SAID DISEASE. THIS WALKTHROUGH SHOWS DISEASES CATEGORIZED AS AFFECTING THOSE WITH XY CHROMOSOMAL DOMINANCE AND XX CHROMOSOMAL DOMINANCE.
USERS MAY CLICK EACH DISEASE BUBBLE TO OPEN UP MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE DISEASE. USERS WILL SEE EXACT FREQUENCY, INHERITANCE, MANIFESTATIONS, PROGNOSIS, AND A MORE DETAILED LIST OF THOSE AFFECTED.
